About the event:
The Atlantic Rally for Cruisers (ARC) is the largest annual transoceanic event, in operation for over 25 years! Following the traditional trade wind route from the Canary Islands to the Caribbean, the ARC currently attracts in excess of 200 yachts most years and it set to be even bigger this year. The excitement builds as yachts gather in the Las Palmas, Gran Canaria in preparation for the immense journey. It is actually a gentle crossing because it is downwind most of the way which means that the boat is not actually heeled over but pretty ‘flat'. The 2800 miles of ocean takes approximately 18 to 24 days to sail, dependent on the winds. On arrival in Rodney Bay, St Lucia you will never be more emotional about seeing a marina!
About the Islands
Las Palmas de Gran Canaria
Gran Canaria is a miniature continent. An island close to Europe, with a wide range of beaches as diverse as the changing sceneries waiting to be discovered. Nearly 60 kilometres of beaches on 236 kilometres of coastline bask under a gentle sun. Las Palmas, the start venue for the ARC, is a modern bustling city, which has grown up around one of the busiest ports of Spain. The yacht marina lies at the southern end of the main harbour, halfway between the Vegueta and the Parque Santa Catalina. St Lucia
Known as Helen of the Caribbean being one of the Caribbean's most beautiful islands, with the rising volcanic peaks of the Grand and Petit Pitons, and landlocked Marigot Bay where a British naval fleet reputedly hid from the French at the time of the Napoleonic wars. The rule of St Lucia was disputed by the French and British until the latter established their claim in 1814. Independence was gained in 1979. St Lucia's culture is a unique mix of French, English and African influences, the French influence marked in the local patois and many of the place names. Rodney Bay, on St Lucia's northern extremity, is the island's main yachting centre and landfall of all World Cruising's transatlantic events. Sailors are always warmly welcomed at Rodney Bay Marina which has a wide range of facilities and is located in a well-protected lagoon. The parties are here too!! Las Palmas organizes a great send -off with a popular Irish night and fancy dress party.
Arriving in St Lucia you are greeted by loud hooters with cocktails waiting for you on the dock and your fellow sailors applauding your amazing feat! The parties continue long into the night with a Caribbean feel, and the week hots up as steel bands play and the bbqs get going.
